1850 Pipe Organ

The Instrument

Organ pipes are made from either wood or metal and produce sound when air under pressure (“wind”) is directed through them. Pipes are arranged by timbre and pitch into ranks. A rank is a row of pipes mounted vertically onto a windchest. An organ contains two actions, or systems of moving parts. When a key is depressed, the key action admits wind into a pipe. The stop action allows the organist to control which ranks are engaged.

We sampled a Pipe Organ built in the year 1850 in Artà’s church (a little village on the island of Mallorca, Spain). You can check the size, look and proportions of this church on the image gallery page on Facebook. The pipes are controlled by a wood keyboard of 54 keys (from C1 to F5). Sustain and release notes sampled, which means that you have the natural reverb tail of the church, it’s amazing! No pitch shifting (note interval) used, sampled every note.

This Pipe Organ has 8 ranks selectable by 16 stops (8 right and 8 left). With 1850 Pipe Organ Pro you can control the volume of each rank separetly, making the instrument very versatile and flexible, you can achieve an enormous amount of different sounds. On the free version you only get the sound of the 8 ranks opened without control on each of them.  Free version lets you control the overall volume and the volume of the tail reverb directly from the GUI. With Pro version you can control the overall volume, pan and each rank directly from the GUI.

GUI has been designed by Cocavet, rendered in 3D. Note that the stop knobs are identical to the real thing (see the real images on Facebook).

Kontakt 4.2.3 needed to load the library. You don’t have Kontakt? No problem, 1850 Pipe Organ is available now for Audio Units and VST (Mac and Windows 32 and 64 bits). That means that you can load them directly into your DAW as a plugin.

To use the generated AU/VST plug-ins for MAC, users have to install a shared runtime library first. This library can be found here.
Audio Units and VST versions only allow 128 simultaneous voices. With Free version this is not a problem, but Pro version may cause troubles because you have 8 files playing on every single key. So we recommend to use Kontakt preferently.

What a wonderful sound. I could see using this for so many different types of composition. It works well as a lead instrument, but also has an ethereal quality to it for film score and tracks that are more ambient”.

I really like that old organ sound. It has lots of character and is a nice addition to the usual clean organs found in typical sample libraries.”

  10. Adam says:

This instrument is stunningly awesome and a tremendous value at its price of under $30 American. Someone commented that it is noisy; on that point, I will note that the electronic noise floor is excellently low, and, although the samples contain ambiance from the real church in which they were recorded, the ambiance blends well in the playing and sounds real and great and gorgeous. Besides, you can clean it up significantly with a decent EQ, if that’s your game, and still have a rich, real-sounding 19th century pipe organ with a ton of tonal flexibility.

I give this all the stars. However many stars you got room for, this gets them.

My one word of advice: Get the Kontakt library version. It’s much more resource-efficient than the VST.

  13. Adam says:

What CC’s control the ranks? I wanna automate tone changes. Doable? Is there a manual? Not that you’d really have much to put in a manual; the instrument is pretty straightforward except for this one thing.

  14. Wavesfactory says:

If you’re using Kontakt you can assign CC by clicking with the right button on the rank you want.

It’s an “avant gout” to the proversion. Thanks
