Tea Towel Drum

The Instrument

In the late 60′s and early 70′s, The Beatles tried to innovate the sound of drums covering the heads of the snare and toms with tea towels to damp the sound. This technique became very popular but has lost over the years. Now that kind of sound evokes that time, and you can have it on your computer for much less than you think.

This drum kit has been recorded with 8 mics:

  • Bass Drum
  • Snare Drum Top
  • Snare Drum Bottom
  • Rack Tom
  • Floor Tom
  • Overhead 1
  • Overhead 2
  • Room

It has 6 repetitions (round robin) and 6 velocities (from soft to strong), but the most important is that on every mic you have the real and natural bleeding of the other parts of the drum. As you can hear on the audio demos, through the mics you can hear exactly what is recorded in a real studio situation. In other words, when you play a key (snare hit, for example), the sound becomes from each of the 8 mics, so there’s 8 files playing. Is like having recorded the drum yourself!

With our custom script you can control the volume, pan and tune of each mic like it was recorded in you own computer or studio. It’s exciting to play and hear it!

You can have this library, more than 5,000 samples and 8’27 Gb for only €9.95!

Thanks. Also interesting about demos (especially 2and 4) – is that sound direct from Kontakt as is after purchasing or it was processed with additional gear/soft?

  4. Wavesfactory says:

They have a soft limiter (L2 by Waves) just to gain a few dbs. No EQ or compression.
You can find an unprocessed version played live with no edition and no plugins or effects here:

Great job of getting that famous Ringo / Abbey Road tea towel sound. It’s very hard to believe your selling this 8GB+ library for $9.95, as I would think you could easily use that up on bandwidth charges alone. Funny, I had my wife check out the demos and told her the price and she said, “You definitely have to get these. For that price, it’s a no-brainer.” I can’t wait until you get these mapped for V-Drums.

    Sounds very cool!

This will be great when it’s additionally losslessly compressed to NCW in Kontakt 4 (by the end user, obviously – since you guys aimed at K3.5 compatibility). Great product!

  7. Thomas says:

This is a great product and a great way to get introduced to Waves Factory! The price doesn’t match the quality of these and the mixer GUI is great to mangle these drums to weird sounds. This is certainly not my last purchase from you

  8. MS says:

This Kontakt instrument is absolutely great!
Your pricing is more than fair, and the quality is top notch. I hope your business model is successful, as it aims for fair customers with low budgets. Congratulations!

  9. SenorSwiffer says:

Awesome sounds… it’s so hard to find good vintage drums.
Is there any way you can make this compatible with Kontakt Player? Restarting every 15 minutes is not fun!

  10. ekco says:

Fantastic library with a great GUI to match!
It sounds great, and the price is more than fair.

I hope this gets all the attention it deserves!

  11. Willie says:

o.k., I’m, sold on the drum. how about the *other* instruments on the “AB” demo? could you list them? thanks

  12. Wavesfactory says:

They are all real except Tea Towel Drum, W-Tambourine (Wavesfactory) and Akoustik Piano (Native-Instruments).

  13. Jacob says:

Hey! I bought this library from you last year and used it on a song on my recent album. You can hear it here (Tea Towel Drum library comes in at 04:02) : http://soundcloud.com/on-impact/penguins-are-always-dressed

I really love this library. Keep up the good work! The new brushes library looks great.

  14. Dylion says:

Hi there, will you bring out this kit for EXS24? It’s the sampler I use all the time in Logic. Won’t ever be buying Kontakt but I love the sound of this kit.

  15. Wavesfactory says:

I’m afraid no, we work primarily in Kontakt and, if the instrument doesn’t need scripting, we also bring it out in EXS24. Tea Towel Drum needs scipting for the mic control, but I suspect that EXS24 will be highly updated on Logic X, so who knows? :)
