W-FabBass
The Instrument
We sampled a Hofner Bass for NI Kontakt (also known as Violin Bass). This is the bass that Paul Mccartney has played through all his life. When you play it you get instant beatlesque sound. We recorded 4 velocity layers and 2 round robins, and added a velocity crossfade to gain realism.
This instrument was recorded with a pick, without passing through any amp or cabinet (Direct Input DI) and premium converters.
There are 4 articulations selectable by Key-switches:
- Muted (Paul played muted in a lot of songs).
- Sustain.
- Glissando UP.
- Glissando DOWN.
You also get fret noises, pick noises, pluck noises and release notes. With our custom GUI (rendered in 3D) you can control the overall volume, the release volume, the pluck volume and we added a cabinet simulator with a switch to turn it on or turn it off.

Man, this bass is nice, thick, plonky, full. This is definitely worth the purchase, folks. The hammer off, which you can control with the sustain, is great for those doubling runs. The pluck knob recreates McCartney’s trademark percussive effect that you hear plenty of on both the Sgt. Pepper’s and White Album.
And even if you take off most of the pluck, you get a pretty damn fine mute bass applicable in many different styles. Wavesfactory, I predict this is going to be one of your signature soundsets.
Thanks Nelson, really appreciated.
Well, Praise the Lord! I can’t . . . . I can’t . . . . I can’t take it any longer! I had to buy it. I already owned the w-Tambourine and w-Fluglehorn so I know that the quality of your sample libraries is very, very good.
LIke so many others, I grew up being an ardent Beatles/McCartney fan. This particular bass doesn’t suit many of my recordings, but boy oh boy, it sure does ‘nail’ that particular vintage British tone when it’s needed.
Curious… The three songs they chose to demo this with were originally recorded, by McCartney, using a Rickenbacker.
